Medicaid Specialty 101 is designed specifically for Florida home health agencies providing Private Duty Nursing (PDN) and Family Home Health Aide (FHHA) services to medically fragile children and other Medicaid recipients with complex care needs.
Providing care to this population requires much more than understanding basic Medicaid requirements. Agencies must successfully navigate eligibility, managed care plan requirements, prior authorization, plans of care, medical necessity, staffing, documentation, service limitations, billing, and communication with Medicaid managed care organizations — all while ensuring continuity of care for patients and families who depend on these services every day.
This workshop will provide a practical overview of Florida’s Medicaid landscape through the lens of the PDN and FHHA provider. Participants will examine how specialty populations move through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) system and how PDN and FHHA services fit into the continuum of care for medically fragile children.
Special attention will be given to the operational relationship between PDN and the FHHA model, including determining the appropriate level of care, authorization and plan-of-care requirements, nurse oversight, training and competency expectations, documentation, billing, and maintaining compliance when multiple caregivers and service types are involved.
The workshop will also address common challenges experienced by providers, including authorization reductions or delays, changes in approved PDN hours, demonstrating medical necessity, staffing challenges, continuity of care, communication with SMMC health plans, claims and reimbursement issues, and helping families understand the differences between PDN and FHHA services.
Attendees receive 4.0 continuing education units for Florida licensed skilled nursing, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
Denise Bellville, RN, BS, is HCAF’s Executive Director. She has been an RN for 45 years, working in critical care, ER, and open heart surgical intensive care unit (SICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before transitioning to the home care industry as an executive for 30 years. Her home care clinical experience ranges from pediatric/adult ventilator cases, infusion therapy, and in-home peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line placements. Her favorite aspect has always been teaching elderly patients information that helps them reach their potential and remain at home.
